Missed the Training Session “How to Conduct a Development Conversation with a Direct Report”?
The video recording is now available! | Cal-ICMA YouTube
If you missed the two live Cal-ICMA training sessions in April on “How to Conduct a Development Conversation with a Direct Report,” there is good news! You can still get the training. To access the video recording of this 90-minute training session, go to www.calicma.org/talent-initiative.
Gallup research has demonstrated that a key way to engage and retain your talent is to conduct one-to-one development conversations with your direct reports. A development conversation is an informal discussion typically between a manager/coach and a direct report or other employee that allows the manager to:
Help the employee explore their career aspirations
Provide feedback
Identify opportunities to learn and grow
Offer support and resources
The training session video provides a simple coaching model for managers to conduct these development conversations and foster the career growth of local government talent.
In addition to the video recording, the Cal-ICMA website features these three talent development tools offered as part of the Cal-ICMA Talent Initiative:
1. Template for Talent Discussions with your Executive Team + Sample (completed by individual Department Heads then discussed at an Executive Team meeting)—a orientation video on how to use the Template is available on the Talent Initiative webpage
2. Menu of Development Opportunities that can be customized for your agency (to be used as part of a development conversation)
3. A Coaching Model for Managers (for conducting a one-to-one development conversation with a direct report)
